The Community Chest Wheelock Swim for a Million
Garnered Community Wide Support to Benefit Local Youth Services
"The Community Chest Wheelock Swim for a Million" has generated another big charity wave. Ardently supported by Wheelock and Company Limited, The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Circle K and stride rite, the event attracted nearly 380 representatives from the corporate sector, disciplinary forces, schools and individuals who pitched in their efforts for charity today (21 September) in Repulse Bay to raise funds for local youth services.
Overwhelming Support for Community Betterment
Following last year’s success, the number of participants increased by 60%. Ms Rose Lee, JP, Campaign Committee Chairman of the Chest highly recommended that Swim for a Million not only help promote a healthy lifestyle, it also encourage the general public to attain inner fulfillment by contributing to worthy causes to create a harmonious society.
The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Mr Sin Yat-kin, SBS, CSDSM, Commissioner of Correctional Services; Mr Chan Kwok-ki, IDSM, Director of Immigration; Mr Cheung Wan Ching, Clement, JP, Commissioner of Customs & Excise; Dr Simon Kwok, BBS, JP, Executive Committee Chairman of The Community Chest; Ms Rose Lee, JP, Campaign Committee Chairman; Mr Peter Pang, JP, Board Member; Event Organising Committee Chairman Mr Douglas C K Woo, Co-Chairmen Mr Adrian M K Li, JP; Mr Stanley Sun; and Mr Stephen Fung, as well as Mr Alex Fong.
"The Community Chest Wheelock Swim for a Million" was divided into four races:

Philanthropy has no boundaries
The event attracted corporations from all sectors to form over 60 relay teams. Corporations participating in the Campaign included Wheelock Properties (Hong Kong) Limited, The Wharf (Holdings) Limited, The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shun Hing Group, Fung Kids (Management) Ltd, Chevalier Group, Sino Group, Tricor Services Limited, HSBC, Hang Seng Bank, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, Morgan Stanley, MTR Corporation, Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC, Circle K Convenience Stores (HK) Limited, Li & Fung (Trading) Limited, stride rite, Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, The Society for the Aid & Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers and many more. Nine teams formed by strong swimmers from the Hong Kong Police Force, Correctional Services Department, Hong Kong Fire Services Department, Customs and Excise Department, Independent Commission Against Corruption, and Immigration Department participated in the Disciplinary Force Relay Race. Students from Wah Yan College, Hong Kong, Wah Yan College, Kowloon, Raimondi College, Christian Zheng Sheng College, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, St Paul’s Co-educational College Primary School also formed teams to support this event.
Industry and community leaders also joined in the Leaders’ Lap to compete for the champion title. They included Mr Douglas C K Woo, Chairman & Managing Director of Wheelock and Company Limited and Event Organising Committee Chairman; Co-Chairmen Mr Stanley Sun, CEO of China-Hongkong Photo Products Holdings Limited; and Mr Stephen Fung, Chief Executive Officer of Fung Kids (Management) Limited; Mr Lau Ming Wai, BBS, JP, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited; The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP, Executive Council Member; Mr Alun C Grassick, Partner of KPMG; Mr Spencer Fung, Group Chief Executive Officer of Li & Fung; Ms Audrey Lo, Managing Director of ALPS Advisory (HK) Ltd; Mr Ronald Liang, Managing Director of LWK & Partners (HK) Ltd; Mr Dario Pong, Executive Director of Shiu Wing Steel Limited; Mr Niki Lai, Director of LWK Landscape Limited; Mr Bryant Lu, Vice Chairman of Ronald Lu & Partners (Hong Kong) Limited and Mr James Riley, Group Finance Director of Jardine Matheson Group. Sixteen participants from eight families took part in the Two-Generation Relay Race ranging in age from seven to 70.
Mr Lee Ka-chiu, John, PDSM, PMSM, JP, Under Secretary for Security and Mr Leon Lai, BBS, MH, Board Member of the Chest graced the Award Presentation as the Guests of Honour. In addition to Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards, the Organiser also introduced Fun Awards such as "The Overall Fastest Individual Swimmer for 400M", "The Youngest School Relay Team", "The Youngest and Most Senior Swimmers", "The Highest Participation Award", "The Best Cheering Teams" and "The Best Effort Teams". A carnival with an array of game booths was also set up on the Repulse Bay beach for all participants.
